Sometimes, the best foods are ridiculously easy to make. I love easy. I love simple.
What is it?
Kefir is a fermented drink made with kefir grains. The grains are cultures of yeast and lactic acid bacteria that resemble a cauliflower in appearance.
Why is it good for me?
- It contains beneficial yeast as well as friendly ‘probiotic’ bacteria found in yogurt. In fact it contains about 30 different strains of bacteria and yeasts.
- It is an antimicrobial and can protect against certain harmful bacteria.
- It can improve bone health
- It can help with various digestive problems and balance out the gut flora.
Where can I get some?
You can make your own which basically just means you need to buy some kefir grains and add them to a liquid of your choice...you can make kefir from a variety of things like milk, coconut milk, goat's milk, sheep's milk and even coconut water. Just follow the instructions on the packet but broadly speaking you add the grains to the liquid, cover and let sit in a room temperature environment for two days.
Alternatively, you can just buy some kefir in your local supermarket. I always grab it in the Polish section where it's usually also way cheaper.
